Glanton - A Village Chronicle

Do you want to read about our wonderful Parish of Glanton?

Why not purchase our Millennium book?

We have produced a book reflecting the past and present of the Parish.

The book covers:

Parish History - the village roots from earliest times to present day. This includes glimpses of the history from Roman times through the exploits of our "Dad's Army" to recent history.

Wildlife Diary - month by month look at the wildlife of the Parish with comments on the rural activities of the area.

Geology - a brief look at the forces which created the landscape of the Parish.

Architectural Heritage - takes a walk around the Parish properties highlighting details of interest of the houses, their character and their history.

A Tradition of Enterprise - always known as a "business" village, surprisingly Glanton still has thirty or so businesses linked with the Parish. The chapter looks at businesses past and present.

People 2000 - contains interviews with many people who were in the village in the year and some interviews from former residents. There are many interesting anecdotes about the village but more importantly about the lives that shaped the people connected with the village today.

2000 Reviewed - this final chapter of the book reflects the activities of the Parish in the year.

With pictures and illustrations liberally spread throughout the publication the book is a good read or a book to browse through and revisit again and again. At almost 200 pages the book reflects the village in a snapshot of time.

The book costs £12.50 and is available from the Village Shop or Post Office. For UK addresses, should you wish to secure a copy by post please add £4.00 postage and packing, sending a cheque, made payable to the Glanton Millennium Group, for £16.50 to Glanton Book, 5 Front Street, Glanton, Alnwick, Northumberland. Cooks for the Millennium

In the year 2000 we celebrated th e77th Glanton Show, but we know the show has been in existence since before 1895.

Over the years the dedication of the exhibitors has never failed to amaze us - producing and bringing their entries to the show despite all the hazards of transporting them safely.

To celebrate the year 2000 we came up with the idea of a cookery book. The book has been compiled from recipes mostly by the "cooks" amongst us - but it is dedicated to all the exhibitors without whom there would be no show.

Any profit we make will go towards helping the Show maintaining the traditions of the "Village Show", at the same time appealing to the changing tastes of the 21st century.

"Glanton Show Cooks for the Millennium" costs £4.00
