Since the last newsletter we have had a number of interesting happenings in the village. You will know that the trees were planted successfully. We will still need to keep a close watch on them because we will be very lucky if all survive.
The fortunate thing is that due to the generosity of all concerned we do have a little money left to replace any that do not survive.
We have also been given a very generous donation to buy a plaque or notice to mark the event. We are currently looking at how best to do this.
On the 15th of April we had the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band performing at the Village Hall.

This was a very successful evening with the members of the band treating us to a wide range of music entertainment. The musicians covered a wide age range and gave a professional performance. |
The entry money was split evenly between the band and ourselves giving the hall a much needed boost in funds.
The evening was so much appreciated by all those who attended we have been encouraged to possibly arrange another concert later in the year.
You will be aware that there is a group meets in the Village Hall to undertake computer training. This group was originally set up with funds from the European Community distributed by the District Council two years ago. It was known as the Glanton Peritec. The funding only lasted one year and since then the group have not received additional funds except from the Parish Council.
Training was delivered by the MARI group and was possibly finishing this year. With much effort by the secretary, Lesley Frater, MARI are continuing the training. A great number of people have benefited from this training and received qualifications that will be useful in finding employment or just taking the mystery out of computing.
Following a recent AGM it has been decided to re-launch the group as the Glanton Computer Association. The group will still continue to supply the computer training but hopes to expand its activities to cover others who do not necessarily want any formal qualifications. It is hoped to start a computer club where people from all ages can come along to discuss computer matters, whether it is how to design a poster, find out what e-mail is or does, how to bank from your home, design a spreadsheet, or what to do with a digital camera and many other things. We hope to learn from each other. The annual subscription for membership of the association will be £10 with a meeting fee of £1. The first computer club will be on the 6th July 2000 at the Memorial Hall. Before that there will be a fund-raising coffee morning on Saturday 17th June 2000. |

A Village meeting took place on Monday 21st May 2000 to discuss various matters of importance to the Village.
Norman Dunn reported on the state of the various millennium projects and the finances of the group. The grants for computer equipment has now been spent in full. This leaves us with £819 of which £244 is allocated to the tree project. The remaining £575 is the currently available funds for other projects.
Originally we considered a lunch for the retired people in the village. After a discussion it was suggested that rather than a lunch we try to have a celebration for all the village, on the lines of the VE/VJ day celebrations.
The suggestions were to have a buffet combined with Children's sports and a display in the Hall. The meeting agreed with this suggestion and Thomas Johnson, Angela Egdell, Richard Verrill, Steve Morris, Tina Meikle and David Girdwood agreed to take the project forward.
We discussed the current problems facing the Village Hall. With increased costs and the need for major repairs the meeting was asked to consider the future of the Hall. The facilities in the hall are only used on a weekly basis by the computer group and, for six weeks, the Yoga session. Once a month the WI use the hall and for the remaining time it is only used for committee meetings and the occasional party/concert or coffee morning.
To undertake the work necessary to bring the hall up to an acceptable level would require a massive fund-raising effort.
Originally Village Halls were regarded as the hub of village life, but we now must decide if our hall has outlived its usefulness. For a great number of years the hall has been managed by a small dedicated committee and before they, again, try and raise the funds necessary we must ask the question "Do we still need a Village Hall and if we do will it be used in the future?"
The meeting decided that we should issue a questionnaire to every house in the village to find out if there is still a need for the Hall, and if it was repaired would it be used in the future. In addition we need to discuss with the Church the possibility of using there hall should we decide the Village Hall is no longer needed. When you receive the questionnaire please fill it in and return it because it is important that we know the views of as many people of Glanton as possible.
Believe it or not it is that time of year again. 12th August is the date for your diary. The Glanton Show will be held that day. I am mentioning it in this newsletter to make sure you have plenty of time to prepare your entries for the show in this special year.

We will be having special classes and additional prizes to mark the millennium. Whether it be a cake in the shape of the Dome or a photograph of you looking like your pet there will be a number of possibilities for you to enter. The schedules will be available from July so make sure you get one and enter. Whether you enter or not we would love to see you at the show. There will be the normal show classes, five-a-side football, children's sports, dog show, sheep trials, sheep show and excellent craft stalls. There is also entertainment on the show field and delicious food in the marquee. If you think you could lend a hand preparing the field or helping on the day please let one of the committee know. |
I am pleased to report that the show coffee morning was a success raising £405.92 net for the day. Thanks to all who supported the event.
Work is continuing apace preparing the cook book and it is hoped to have this ready in July for sale on the Show Day.
Many thanks to all those who sent in recipes.
Again the work for this book is going well. We have had articles in a variety of publications and a number of people have written in with information.
Ruth Cocks has started the interviews with various people in the village and may call on You. Remember the book is to be a record of the Village for the year 2000 so everyone in the village has something to offer, whether you have been here a moment or a lifetime, you are part of the Village in this year.
Thomas Johnson is photographing various events in the village and will shortly be calling on you to have a picture taken of your family in front of your house.
We are grateful for your co-operation and assistance in helping us record Glanton in 2000. We are still working to the deadline to publish the book by Easter next year, when copies will go on sale.
Ruth Cocks is now the Village Correspondent for News From Around The Districts in the Northumberland Gazette. Ruth would be grateful for your help in identifying news stories, not just news of groups but personal/family items too (special anniversaries, birthdays etc.) Please pass on any information and let's get Glanton on the map.

You might be wondering why I'm featuring Christmas Trees in this edition. I think you will all agree that having the tree last Christmas was a great success. So that we can continue to have a tree each year we have set up a fund through the Parish Council to collect money through the year to pay for the tree and lights.
You will see a collecting box at as many of the village functions as we can manage. Please give what you can.
