What a Great Day

It now seems a long time ago but the 3rd of September was a fitting way to mark this millennium year.

The organising committee of Thomas Johnson, Steve Morris, Tina Meikle, Richard Verrill, Angela Egdell and David Girdwood gave us a day to remember. With many other helpers they managed to put on activities for all generations ranging from Children's Sports to the combined church service, from still photographs to moving memories and a tea fit for the day.

In addition we also managed a very good turnout for the Village Photograph, and remember in ten years time those letters for the time capsule.

On behalf of us all I would like to extend our collective thanks to those organising the event.

In addition to the wonderful day £296 was raised.

Glanton Show

On the 15th of April we had the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band performing at the Village Hall.

Prior to our millennium event we must not forget another great day, a sunny show day.

The show was a great success thanks to the very many helpers who make this day very special.

The show was fortunate to receive sponsorship this year from the Home Housing Association 1998 Ltd and North British Tapes Limited.

We must not forget to thank the Guirys and the Hunters for the use of their fields. I am sure it does cause them some inconvnience and a lot of work but we never hear any complaints.

Clay Pigeon Shoot

Even earlier we had the annual clay pigeon shoot which raises valuable funds for the show. This was again a great success and thanks go to all those who help in its organisation, especially John Swanson and Joe Easton who take on the bulk of the organisation.

Village Hall

The latest position with the village hall is that the committee has agreed to ask a number of individuals to take on certain aspects of the hall project. One group will be looking at what needs to be done to the hall to bring it up to standard while the other will be looking at the financial viability of the hall.

Should we wish to obtain grants for the work we must demonstrate that the hall has a viable financial future therefore we must try and examine ways in which the hall can generate more income.

The work is in the very earliest stages at present and we will keep you informed of the progress we make.

There will be an annual general meeting for the Hall on the 14th November 2000 at 7:30 p.m.. If you would like to join the hall committee you will be welcome to attend that meeting in the hall.

Using the Hall

The main function of the hall committee is to look after the hall and make it available for people to use. The small band of committee members cannot arrange all of the activities which may go on in the hall. If you have any ideas for starting a group to use the hall but the thought of being on a committee leaves you cold then why not discuss your ideas with Norman Dunn.

100 Club

For many grant applications we need to demonstrate we are contributing to the fund-raising ourselves. Our first venture to collect funds is to launch a new 100 Club.

The hall committee will be selling 100 Club tickets for £5 each. The one payment of £5 will entitle you to enter six monthly draws with cash prizes of £20, £10, and £5 for the first five months and a final grand draw in the sixth month with prizes of £50 and £25.

The five monthly draws will take place in Johnston's shop on the third Saturday of the month. The final draw will be announced in due course.

Tickets can be obtained from the hall committee or at Johnston's shop. For your information the current Hall Committee is, Joe Easton (Chairman), Norman Dunn (Secretary), Lesley Frater (Treasurer), Pam Bridges, Angela Egdell, Mary Easton, Pat & Marion Guiry, Margaret M Johnston and Douglas & Marion Richardson.

Cooks for the Millennium

The sale of our cook book is going well with special thanks to Robert and Gayle and Iris for their efforts and to all the committee members who have done so well.

There are still a number of books left so if you need any for that ideal Christmas or birthday gift remember the cook book. They are available from members of the committee, the Post Office, the Shop , the Pub and the Hairdressers.

Village Photograph

A copy of the excellent photograph taken on the Millennium Celebration Day is currently on display in Johnson's Shop. Prints can be ordered from George Skipper in various sizes and costs. If you want a print please complete the order form provided in the shop.

Parish Council

Christmas Tree Fund

Following the success of the Christmas Tree the Parish Council have set up a fund to try and have the tree each year. Collections have been made at various events through the year. If you wish to donate to this fund please send any donations to Linda Lazenby.

Beyond the Millennium

Following the success of all the Millennium Projects this year the Council discussed what will happen to the funds at the end of the year. The book project will continue well into next year and there will be some spending required on the Oak Avenue.

Millennium Book

The work on the book is progressing well and we are still on target for publication in the second half of 2001.

We have accumulated a lot of information during this project some of which we will appear in the book and other information we will use for other projects.

We are looking into the possibility of organising an afternoon/evening event to let you see the information we have and seek your help to put names to faces or dates to events.

Please watch out for further information.
