Symbol Competition

There were a limited number of entries for the symbol competition but the quality of entries was good. The winners of the sections were:

Ruth Cocks and John Dodds decided after lengthy and careful deliberation that the overall winner was Lucy Hannah Farley Here's Lucy's winning design - click on this small picture to see a full-sized version.

Thanks to all who took the time to enter and to the judges for their hard job well done.

Hall

The hall committee has decided to increase its fund-raising activities to cover the expected financial shortfall this year, and to give a surer financial base for future fund-raising to repair and regenerate the village hall. A number of activities have been suggested, including an auction. It was originally thought to have it during April but other pressures have meant that it will be postponed until October.

We will be looking for all sorts of items to auction, whether it is the unwanted Ming vase or an hour of your time ironing. Get your thinking caps on between now and the date of the auction for what you can offer and what you will want to bid for.

In June John and Claire Swanson have kindly offered to host a garden party to coincide with the blossoming of their laburnum arch, a sight to behold. Conditions permitting.

We have also decided to keep the 100 Club running for the next six months. For one payment of £5 you have entry into six monthly draws. The first five draws will have a first prize of £20, second of £10 and a third of £5. The final draw has a first prize of £50 and a second prize of £25. The draws take place on the third Saturday of the month at Johnson's Shop.

Tickets can be obtained from committee members or the shop.

Please support these fund-raising activities to help us finance the hall.

Millennium Book

We are reaching the final stages of preparing the millennium book. Despite having the lion's share of the actual writing, Ruth Cocks was the first to finish her section about the people of the village. This is now being proof-read.

We have set ourselves a deadline of Easter to have all the sections written. The book will then be edited and designed before the target of the beginning of May to go off to the printers.

We then hope to have the book printed professionally and be available for sale in July.

We knew this was an ambitious project and it has been a lot of work for the various section authors, and all who have helped in the process. Our main thanks go to all of you who have taken the time to speak to us about your memories.

We hope the book will do justice to all the memories of those who have been interviewed. We will have interesting facts about the history and nature of the village, and fascinating facts about the architecture. Lying at the heart of the book will be the people and businesses who have shaped Glanton, past and present.

Foot & Mouth

It is hoped that the worst of this current crisis is nearing an end but it is important that we continue to support the farmers in the area.

Life is going on but MAFF have given some advice on what the public should not do at this time.

  • Do not go near cattle, sheep, pigs or deer, wherever you are, and never feed farm animals. If you find yourself near these animals, walk away from them.
  • Do not go on farmland which has been or is being used by livestock.
  • Do not leave waste food in open countryside or on farmland.
  • Do not use footpaths that are closed. Particularly in areas close to infected farms, local authorities may have closed footpaths. You must obey these closures.
  • Do not let your dog off its lead as it may cause animal movements.

Farmers have faced many crises in the recent past so it is important we help in any way we can. If a farmer has put a precautionary notice up, please respect their wishes.

Parish Council News

Civic Amenity Site

The Parish Council was informed that the bottle bank etc. had opened again at Wooler.

Dog Fouling

A concern was again raised about dog fouling within the thirty mile limit signs. It had been hoped that the village would have had in place a dog waste bin. The Parish Council wishes to remind people that prosecutions may take place should the rules be broken.

Housing Needs Survey

We have still not had the results of this promised survey. The Parish Clerk is attempting to obtain the results. A reminder from the last newsletter - a number of people had said they were interested in self build housing on their questionnaires but did not give a contact name or address. Would anyone still interested in a project of this nature please contact Steve Morris at 3 Garden Terrace, Glanton 01665 578449 for more information.

Storm Drains

With the exception of the West Turnpyke the council have been to repair the drains.

Village Meeting

Each Parish should hold a village meeting once a year in April or May. These are useful meetings to allow the Parish Council access to the views of the people in the Parish.

The meeting this year will be held on the 21st May.

Among the topics we could discuss are:

The Parish Council will draw up an agenda nearer the time so please keep an eye on the notice board for further details.

Please try and attend the meeting because we have demonstrated that by working together we can achieve a lot.

Glanton Show

There will be a meeting of the Show committee in May when we will discuss the prospects for this year's show. It is our intention that the show will go on. The show may not be able to be held in its traditional form but we will probably consider an alternative event in the village halls.

There will be a further update in the next newsletter.

In addition, a press release has been issued.
