I'm sure you must have heard the Hall is having an auction on the 13th October 2001 at 6:00 p.m. in the Memorial Hall. The Hall committee have been contacting various businesses in the area and have dropped leaflets through your doors to get pledges and articles to auction on the day.
Please make sure you fill out the form or bring your pledges to the Hall on Wednesday, 10th October or Friday, 12th October between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. If you need the items collected please contact one of the committee members.
Any contribution will be appreciated.
We have already had some pledges. The House of Hardy at Alnwick have donated an hour's casting tuition on their pool. Linden Hall have donated a round of golf for four, we hope to have donations from football and rugby clubs, groceries, meat, bulbs and much much more.
We also hope to have pledges in kind, maybe an hour's ironing, a dinner party or anything else your imagination can deliver.
We hope the event will be fun, at the same time raising valuable funds for the Hall. Please try and support the event, on the day and by pledging beforehand.
You will be able to view our offerings from 2:00 until 5:30 p.m. on the 13th then bid for your favourite items from 6:00 p.m.. We will also accept sealed bids if you will be away on the night.
We look forward to seeing you on the night.

After much deliberation the show did go ahead this year. By using the Memorial Hall and the United Reformed Church Hall we managed to find room for many of the classes. Of course there were no outdoor events but the contributors did us proud with the variety of entries on the day. Having the flowers in the Memorial Hall and the baking in the Church Hall, the aroma from both halls was very attractive. You will remember that the Show Committee decided not to charge an entry to the halls but did leave out boxes for donations to the ARC Addington Fund, which has been set up to help combat the effects of foot and mouth affected businesses. The generous contributions amounted to a donation of £292, a great result. The Show Committee would like to thank all those who took time to submit entries and also thank all those who supported us on the day. |
The Parish Council has been in contact with the District Council about various problems with the drains in the village. We are writing again to confirm when they can be inspected. One problem has occurred in the past when access to the drains was restricted because of cars parked over them. If we are told when the drains will be inspected we will put out cones. Please try and avoid parking near the cones so a proper inspection can be carried out.
The Parish Council have written in support of a public enquiry into the issues surrounding the outbreak of the disease.
Should you wish to add your voice to the call, you can by supporting the Journal project or by writing to the Prime Minister or Margaret Beckett.
As the nights draw in quickly, can you please remember to wear something light if you are out walking at twilight or in the dark so you can be seen by motorists.
It was reported to the Council that concerns had been expressed about bike riders coming through the cut straight out on to Playwell Road. The Council is making enquiries so that any problems may be resolved.
The questionnaires have been collected and sent off to Learning Choices. They will respond in the next few weeks. We will contact those who completed questionnaires but will also put up notices for others who may be interested in attending.
Learning Choices have recently appointed two new tutors, Barrie Younger who is an ITC tutor and Linda Hatton who does Basic Skills and Core Skills.
Computer courses are currently being developed and will cover an introductory course, CLAIT training and IBT 2 courses. These courses will cover everything to do with a basic understanding of computers through to more advanced requirements of a modern office.
Further information should be available in the near future.

There has been a good response to the table tennis club. Juniors sessions are on a Monday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at a cost of œ2 per week. Seniors are also on Mondays from 8:30 to 10:00 p.m. at a cost of £3 per week. There are now three tables available and although there has been a lot of Juniors turning up there are not so many seniors. Why not join next Monday? Professional coaching is given by John Ainley and it is a fun night. |
Katie Stothard and Rosie Wilton both obtained 4 grade A A-levels in the recent exams. For such a small village to have two successes at this level is remarkable. We wish them success in their further education.
Please remember to tell Norman Dunn about any items of interest to include in future newsletters. Please don't assume we have heard about some interesting news items. |

A printer's in Berwick has recently returned the original type written sheets from the 1978 Willis Dixon book of Glanton. If anyone is aware of the whereabouts of Willis Dixon's family please let Norman Dunn know.
Thank you to all who have bought copies of Glanton - A Village Chronicle. We have managed to sell 250 copies will very little advertising. Thank you to all those who have paid compliments to the publication and we again apologise for those inevitable errors that have been pointed out. We would also like to thank Robert and Gayle, Richard and Iris who have been selling the book on our behalf; without their help the task would be much more difficult. Remember Christmas is looming and the book would be an ideal gift for friends and family. |

Barbara and John also thank us for being such lovely people and making their Ministry in Glanton such a special time.
