Monday 3rd June, Golden Jubilee day was celebrated in style in the village.
We helped to raise funds for the event with A Coffee Evening at Glanton Pyke Farm. This raised a marvellous £318 to get things underway.
Calum Kohler and John Swanson helped us organise the planting of the Crown on the Bank which was funded by the Show and Millennium Committees. Perhaps not everyone welcomed the recent rains but the splendid Crown certainly benefited. We must also thank Tina and Tony Meikle for floodlighting the bank during the Jubilee week.
On the 28th May 2002 we had our annual Clean Sweep. The Parish Council would like to thank all those who took part on the day and in the time around to make the village look so fine. We must also thank Alnwick District Council's Cleansing Department who sent a road sweeper to help us out.
There have been many comments from people outside the village saying how good the village looks. This is due in part to those with gardens facing the street who keep them in good order. It is also thanks to Marion Guiry who plants up the troughs in the village.
The next event was the Village Songs of Praise in the United Reformed Church.
Then 3rd June 2002 - Jubilee Day Celebrations began.
Events continued all day -
The result of the Balloon Race was first, Dorothy Ewart, whose balloon managed to reach a beach near Aberdeen, second, Denis Rough and third Mrs Sylvia Smith.
Thanks to your generosity at the coffee evening, to all those who gave donations to the event, and the proceeds from other fundraising activities on the day, the result was a net profit on the event of £198.21 which will be used for other village projects.
Thanks to all who helped throughout the day, and in the time leading up to the event. It is gratifying that many people are so generous, giving up their time to make these events happen for us all.
First Responders are teams of volunteers, from any walk of life, trained to administer life saving treatment to victims of heart attacks. As groups are based in the community they are able to reach a victim and administer treatment before the ambulance service arrives.
Ten people recently met to form a group to cover Glanton, Powburn and Whittingham. £4000 is needed to buy all the equipment. A defibrillator costs £2500. Fortunately a manufacturer has donated half the cost and it is hoped that matched funding can be obtained from the British Heart Foundation. The Medical Practice in Alnwick has generously donated £500. This leaves £1000 to raise. We could do with more help, either as a first responder or help with administration or donations.

The WI has received information about criminal activity it is useful to know about. We are not aware on anyone being affected in the village, and hope to keep it that way. This is to make you aware of scams but hope you don't worry about it.
We have been informed of the following scam, which is targeting women in particular. They received a phone call apparently from the Post Office asking them to confirm their company postcode. When this is given, they are told that they have become eligible for some gift vouchers for their co-operation and are asked to provide their home address and postcode in order to receive the vouchers. So far 90% of the women who have provided this information have been burgled as it is assumed that their homes are empty during office hours. The police are aware of this scam and the Post Office has confirmed that it is NOT conducting postcode surveys.
If you receive a telephone call from an individual who identifies himself/herself as being an AT & T Service Technician conducting a test on that telephone line, or anyone else, who asks you to do the following, don't.
They will state that to complete the test the recipient should touch nine, zero, then hash (90#) and then hang up. To do this gives full access to your phone line, which allows them to place long distance, international or chat-line calls billed to your account. The police have information suggesting that many of these calls are coming from jails and prisons. The information has been checked out by the police and is correct. Do not press 90 for anyone.
We are pleased to say the village show went ahead on the 10th August this year. Due to the ongoing administrative difficulties on sheep movements they were still missing from the event but other activities were getting back to normal.
Although the day started cold, by the time the judging was done the day warmed up slightly.
John Swanson, the Show Chairman, wishes to thank all those who helped on the day, preparation before and clearing up after the event and throughout the year. Without many helpers the show could not happen.
Many people in the village generously pay a subscription to the Show each year. We can benefit even further from the Inland Revenue if the subscriber is a taxpayer. By completing a Gift Aid Declaration we can claim 28% tax back on your subscription. If you give a subscription to the show and you are a taxpayer please fill out a declaration. Copies of the form can be obtained from Marion Guiry or Norman Dunn. Please return them to 5, Front Street, Glanton.
The Eslington Estate has kindly donated a day's shooting. A raffle has been organised for this wonderful prize. For those interested, tickets are on sale from John Swanson at £10 each for a prize worth over £200. The draw will be made on 15th September 2002.
The Memorial Hall was successful in obtaining an Awards for All grant to employ an architect to survey the Hall and devise plans for the refurbishment, including disabled access. The survey has been done and plans are in the process of being completed.

The NTC Touring Theatre Company will stage a performance of TARTUFFE by Moliere in the Memorial Hall on Tuesday, 8th October 2002 at 7:30 p.m.
Tartuffe was the original 'Carry On' film - an hilarious and outrageous classic that, 350 years on, still has the ability to get the audience laughing. Tartuffe, a rotten, religious impostor, worms his way into the once ordered household and vulnerable heart of prosperous merchant Orgon. Under the guise of piety he looks set to succeed in driving away the son, marrying the daughter, seducing the wife, imprisoning Orgon and leaving the family destitute despite the best efforts of Orgon's streetwise servant Dorine.
Cue disguises, thwarted lovers, eavesdropping and the famous 'table scene' considered by many to be the funniest comic set pieces ever written for the stage. Tartuffe is performed in a style with its roots in Commedia del'Arte, yet with a relevance and humour that will delight modern-day audiences.
Tickets will be on sale from members of the Hall committee in the near future. Please come along and support the Hall.
Although we had awful weather for the day people seemed to enjoy the event. The Hall Committee would like to thank all those who opened their gardens and everyone who helped on the day.
Aerial PhotographMike Gains took a colour aerial photograph of the village recently and has offered to sell it on behalf of Hall Funds. Copies cost £2.50 each for an A4 print, the same size as this sheet. Please contact Norman Dunn to place an order. |

Our Millennium Group was set up in 1999 to help organise events for the Millennium. After successfully planting an Avenue of Oaks, organising events through the year, distributing coins for the kids and writing Glanton - A Village Chronicle it continued the work into following years. There have now been 375 books sold from the original order of 500 and the group has net funds of £2,765.74.
At a meeting of the Parish Council on 25th July 2002 it was decided that the activities of the group will now become a subcommittee of the Parish Council. Its aim will be to promote activities to enhance life in our community.
Susan Collingwood Cameron, John Swanson, Thomas Johnson and Linda Lazenby will be the subcommittee members, with George Dodds and Steve Morris acting as advisors from the village.
It has been reported that again a number of children are playing on the Bus Shelter roof. The shelter is not a play area and could be dangerous.
Home Housing Association have asked if anyone in the area is interested in occupying one of their properties in the Village to make sure they complete one of their forms. This will not guarantee a house but will mean Home Housing is aware of your interest.
Forms can be obtained from Linda Butler, at Home Housing Association, 270 Stanhope Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. NE4 5JT - Telephone 0191 273 3508 or Linda Lazenby, the Parish Clerk.
I am pleased to report that Richard Johnson won the Glendale Middle School Tennis Tournament. Richard also plays table tennis in the Memorial Hall. Monday night sessions will start again shortly following a summer break.
We were saddened to learn that Neil McClain passed away on the 12th June 2002.
We also heard that George Avery, a judge at the Village Show for many years, passed away on 23rd July 2002.
