We
are pleased to say the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band will be performing in the Hall again on Saturday,
3rd May 2003 at 7:30.
This is a return visit from this great band. The previous concert was in April 2000 when we were treated to a wonderful mixture of favourite music. Those who missed that concert should make sure you catch up with the Band on this visit.
Tickets are on sale from Hall Committee members or the Village Shop at £4 for adults and £2 for children.
This live entertainment is the latest in a stream of events organised by Pam Bridges and other members of the Hall Committee. Not only do they help to raise funds for the Hall but they also demonstrate that the Hall is used by the people of the area and that it is an amenity that is worth supporting. This is especially important when we embark on our fundraising endeavours to let us refurbish the Hall.
Why not enjoy a night's entertainment and at the same time support the Hall.
It is intended to start another 100 Club in April. You purchase a ticket for the price of £5. This enters you into six monthly draws. The first five draws have three prizes of £20, £10 and £5 with the final draw first prize of £50 and the second £25. Tickets are on sale now from members of the hall committee or the Village Shop.
To help raise fund for the Hall and following success from 2001 Open Gardens, Claire and John Swanson are opening their gardens again on Saturday, 8th June 2003. This is to coincide with the wonderful flowering Laburnum Arch.
Further details will be available in the next newsletter but make sure you get the date in your diary for this opportunity to see the wonderful work done on the Gardens.
The architect is now finalising the revised proposals for the Hall and is currently estimating costs for the refurbishment of the Hall. We hope to say more about these proposals at the forthcoming Village Meeting.
As you may know the nominations for election to the Parish Council closed on the 1st April 2003.
A number of the existing Parish Councilors will not be standing this year so the Council may have a different look following the elections on the 1st May 2003.
We will give more information about the new Parish Council should the newsletter continue after the elections.
Parish Council work has changed over the years and as we move into this new era Glanton has had the great benefit of being served by more Senior members of the community as well as some new members. The benefit of this balance has been that although we have been able to cope with the additional changes imposed on Parish Councils we have retained an eye to the culture that has made Glanton the attractive community it is.
The Parish Council wishes to express its deep felt thanks to all those who have put their heads above the parapets to serve their community but having "done their bit", decided not to stand again this year.
A
Village Meeting will be held on Tuesday, 20th May 2003 at 7:30 in the Memorial Hall. The Parish Council
regard this as an important event so you are able to tell us where you would like us to concentrate our
efforts.
We will also be giving feedback on the progress of the Memorial Hall refurbishment, the current projects from the Millennium Fund and any other matters affecting the village at that time.
One
of our Village traditions is the annual clean sweep. This is a day set aside where we encourage everyone to
spring clean their bit of Glanton. We arrange for the Cleansing Department of the District Council to send
a road sweeper near the date and we collect your sweepings on the day. Don't leave the village out of your
spring-cleaning chores.
This year's clean sweep day is Wednesday, 21st May at 6:00 p.m. We hope everyone will join in.
On the Saturday, 9th August 2003 we will be celebrating our 80th Glanton Show. This traditional show has a long history and has the reputation of adapting and changing with the prevailing situation at the time. This year will be no exception.
The exhibitors, on show day, always make such a difference and we would encourage everyone to check out the schedule in a couple of months time to get yourself prepared to add to the tent display.
We are also looking at various attractions to help pass the time on show day. We will be bring back the successful Falconry display and have live music. We will also be looking at encouraging more attractions to the show field.
It takes a great deal of effort by everyone organising this event. If you think you can help in any way please volunteer by contacting John Swanson, Mike Bridges, Marion Guiry, Norman Dunn or any of the Committee Members. The more volunteers we have the more everyone can enjoy the day.
There is a meeting of the Show Committee on Wednesday, 29th April 2003 at 8:00 pm in the Memorial Hall. The committee will be discussing this year's show. Look out for further information in the next newsletter.
To start this year's show fundraising the coffee morning will be on Saturday, 10th May 2003. There will be a variety of stalls including the ever-popular plant stall. After a poor financial year last year why not pop along on the 10th May to help support the show.
Our good news - we are getting a Minister.
Edward Butlin has accepted our Call to become Minister of the joint Pastorate of Felton, Longframlington and Glanton. Edward comes from Wirksworth in rural Derbyshire, is at present completing his training at Queen's College, Birmingham and will be ordained in our Church on 6th September 2003. He is married to Julia who is a nurse.

The Community Council of Northumberland is re-launching their rural stress initiative. Their leaflet explains - Help at Hand - Do you know someone who is experiencing: Financial, business or employment difficulties, worries about their future, family or relationship problems, loneliness or bereavement.
To the person concerned their problems may be overwhelming but there is help available. This help can range from benefit or business advice to befriending or counselling. Practical and emotional support is at hand.
You can help: Let the person know that they are not the problem and that they are not alone. Encourage them to share their problems - with you, the family, GP, or clergy. Talking can help put things in perspective. Encourage them to contact one of the organisations below - as part of a network of agencies they can ensure contact with the most appropriate source of help.
All enquiries will be treated in strictest confidence. A copy of part of their leaflet is reproduced below. Extra copies can be obtained from the Northumberland Rural Stress Initiative, Tower Buildings, 9 Oldgate, Morpeth, Northumberland NE61 1PY, telephone 01670 505278
