For well over 40 years Marion Guiry
has held office with Glanton Show. At the AGM, held on the 5th November 2003 Marion decided to step down as secretary. She was treasurer of the show for a while then became secretary.
Many Chairmen have come and gone but Marion carried on her stalwart role of working tirelessly throughout the year to bring everything together for the one day in the year.
Marion has seen the Show change locations, have financial problems, very many good times, pipe bands in the street, fancy dress, sports for the whole village, tug of war and many other innovations but come rain hail or shine Marion was at her post handling whatever surprise was lurking for that year's show.
Marion has seen many changes in the Show over the years but the one constant that remains is her admiration of all those dedicated souls that exhibit every year. She has observed the many friends and supporters who turn up year on year with their baking, flowers, sewing and every other exhibit whether it is raining or fine. Marion regards those exhibitors as the real Show supporters.
On behalf of the committee and the past Chairmen John Swanson presented Marion with a decanter (and a little something to put into it), he expressed a very sincere thank you for the service Marion did for the show.
Marion thanked the committee and shared some of the many memories of the shows past including showing us a pair of candlesticks that the Show committee presented to Pat and Marion at the time of their marriage in 1958. Marion had only been on the Show Committee a short time when she received the gift but the far-sighted committee told Pat and Marion that they regarded it as an investment for the future - certainly an investment that has paid off.
Marion is not leaving the committee so will be available as a source of advice for our new secretary Claire Swanson and Assistant Secretary Pam Bridges. Marion, Pat and John will also be helping out with the Sheep Show in future years.
John Swanson was re-elected Chairman this year with Mike Bridges as Vice Chairman and Norman Dunn as Treasurer.
Next year's show will be on Saturday, 14th August 2004, get the date in your diary.
The Memorial Hall held its AGM on Wednesday, 19th November 2003. During the year the Hall has held three NTC productions, which were well received, we had a return visit from the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band as well as their fundraising events. The committee has also received a number of donations through the year and a legacy, all contributing to making the financial aspects of the hall more secure.
Pam Bridges, the secretary, said that the Hall was being used more frequently but that we still needed much more help to make the Hall viable for the future. Some funding is dependant on the Hall being used more often. So if you have an idea of an activity you could organise to use the hall or if you could help in fundraising why not join us. Anyone wishing to help out the Hall should contact Pam.
There will be a Bottle Bingo in the Memorial Hall on Monday, 29th December 2003, 7:00pm for eyes down at 7:30pm.
The Parish Council met on Wednesday, 26th November 2003. Cllr Mrs SE Bolam, our County Councillor, explained that there has been a setback in allocating her allowance of County Council spend this year and was therefore looking to pull forward some spending she proposed for next year to help out other communities in Cllr Bolam's area. The Parish Council highlighted our long outstanding request to extend the thirty-MPH speed limits in the village to cover all the residential area. Cllr Bolam is to contact the Officials at the County Council to arrange a visit to Glanton to discuss the various options put forward by the Parish Council. Mrs Susan Collingwood Cameron thanked Cllr Bolam for her help in moving this long outstanding request on.
Norman Dunn and John Swanson reported on various meetings attended. There will be some changes to the structure of the County Council Highways Department in the near future. They have been attempting to survey all roads in the area. This will allow the Highways Department to give better advice on the priorities they use in deciding which repairs they can do and when they can do them.
The Boundary Commission will soon report on the options they have for the future of the County and District Councils in Northumberland. You will know that in 2004 a referendum will be held on whether our region wants a regional assembly or not. On that ballot paper will be a second question regarding the shape of local government we want if there is support for a regional assembly. We currently have some services supplied by the District Council in Alnwick and other services by Northumberland County Council. This "two tier" system will not be an option if there is a positive vote for a regional assembly.
The Parish Council will be monitoring the current consultative exercise very carefully to ensure our local voice can still be heard in any new structure. Shortly every household will receive a leaflet from the Boundary Commission giving two structures for a new look council for our area. You can give personal feedback to the Boundary Commission and the Parish Council will be responding to this consultation.
John Swanson reported that the number of books left for sale is now down to single figures. Thanks to everyone who bought a little bit of our local history.
