Benefits from "the Book"

Sales of the millennium book have picked up again as they have now been made available in a number of bookshops in Northumberland. They are also now available in Heighley Gate and the early indications are that they are selling well. They will shortly be on sale in the Museum in Alnwick.

Until recently the books were only on sale in the village or by post yet we managed to sell over 400 copies in this way.

Apart from direct and advance sales the Glanton Millennium Group would like to acknowledge and thank Robert and his team for selling 80 books, Richard, at the Post Office, for 50 sales, Iris, at the hairdressers, who sold 29, Norman selling 28 and Marion selling 14.

And of course thanks go to everyone in the village, and friends of the village, who made it all possible by contributing to the production of the book and buying the book after it was produced.

Results

The result of all the activities in the Millennium Year a fund passed on to the Parish Council of, to date, £2,901.95, with more sales to come.

Copies of the Millennium Group accounts have been issued each year at the Village Meeting. Copies of the accounts are available from Norman Dunn up to 31st March 2002. The current year is available from Linda Lazenby. Please contact either Norman or Linda if you want copies of the accounts.

Christmas Party

An early beneficiary of the funds was the very successful Christmas Party organised by Thomas Johnson and Claire Swanson with many helpers. All who attended had a great time.

Christmas Tree

Another beneficiary of the funds was the whole village as it was used to purchase the Christmas tree. Thanks to all who helped Joe Easton and the team get the tree from high in the Cheviots. Thanks again this year go to the congregation of the United Reformed Church who let us use the electricity from the church to make such a festive treat.

Unexpected Donation

Did you know we have a Glanton Golf Club? Well we do. A group of like-minded individuals based on the Queen's Head formed themselves into the Glanton Golf Club. After their activities they have generously donated £70 to the Millennium Fund.

Future Projects

John Swanson is heading the sub-committee now charged with managing the Millennium Fund. They are looking to use this money for the benefit of the village as a whole. The idea is to identify projects of a more permanent nature for the benefit of the community.

Hall

Live Entertainment in the Village Hall

Another successful event took place in the village hall, Rumpelstiltskin, by Mike Kenny performed by the NTC Touring Theatre Company. From accounts a great night of fun was had by all.

The theatre company will be returning on 8th September to provide more entertainment. Other fundraising ideas from the Hall Committee will appear in the next newsletter.

Refurbishment

Work is still happening on plans for the refurbishment of the hall. The architect's proposals are being fine-tuned with a wish list in preparation for the funding drive. There has been some disappointing news on the attitude of the National Lottery's Community funding programme as it has changed its policy to village projects. There are many other funding pots available so the fundraising is still possible and we will work closely with the architect to make sure our business plan and building plans reflect the best possible options to attract funders.

Unexpected Legacy

On a number of occasions in the past the hall has benefited from friends of the Hall making bequests in their wills. The hall has again benefited from a bequest. Indiana Doxford sadly passed away last year but very generously left £1,000 to our village hall. Indiana maintained a property in the village for many years and the family are intending to keep it on. The Hall Committee would like to thank the family of Indiana and to everyone else who have kindly made provision in their wills for the village.

Parish Council

Glanton Computer Association

For many years Lesley Frater, almost single-handedly, has kept the computer training alive in the village. Currently there are no trainers available for remote training therefore it has been decided that the accounts and assets of the computer association will revert to the Parish Council, as was previously agreed.

The remaining funds from the Computer Association will be ring fenced by the Parish Council for village computer activities or training in the future.

The Parish Council will continue to try and identify computer training opportunities should they occur.

The Parish Council wishes to express their sincere thanks to all the work Lesley has done over the years.

Being seen at night

Following our previous pleas for those walking dogs in these dark winter days it has been reported that people are wearing reflective sashes and clothing. I understand some dogs are also wearing reflective coats. Thanks to everyone who has helped make it easier for drivers to spot you in the dark.

Glanton Cyber Café

You can now surf the internet free of charge from the village shop. This scheme is being funded by the County Council to try and improve access to Council services from rural areas. Although you first meet the County Council web site you are free to visit other sites. Why not try it out and visit our own site. Type in to the address box www.glanton.org.uk and see where that leads you.

United Reformed Church

Thank you to the many people who came to the Village Carol Service - we sent £175 from the collection to the Air Ambulance Service.

Women's World Day of Prayer

This year the service will be held in BOLTON CHAPEL on Friday, 7th March 2003 at 2:00 pm. The service has been prepared by the Christian Women of the Lebanon and the theme is Holy Spirit, Fill Us. The address is to be given by the Rt. Hon Alan Beith MP. All welcome (Men, Women and Young People). This service is interdenominational and is supported by all Christian Churches in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Air Ambulance Service

The WI have arranged for a speaker to come to our meeting on Tuesday, 4th March 2003. Anyone who came and was disappointed in November is welcome to come along to this meeting to hear about the work. Time 7:30 pm in the Memorial Hall.

Marion Guiry

Glanton Show

There is a meeting of the Show Committee on Wednesday, 5th February 2003 at 7:30 pm in the Memorial Hall. The committee will be discussing this year's show. Look out for further information in the next newsletter.

Hitting the Target (we hope!)

One of the many opportunities to separate you from your hard-earned cash at last year's show was a raffle for a day's shooting. We are pleased to announce the winner was Bruce Dodds, the raffle made £150 plus a generous donation of £50 from Mr Dodds.

Another great WI idea:
Glanton 999 Identification Scheme

On occasions in the past it has been a problem getting the emergency services to the correct house in the remote villages of the area since control of those services has been centralised. Glanton WI has borrowed an idea devised by Allenheads WI.

The WI has taken the time and effort to identify the Ordinance Survey Grid Reference Number for all properties in the Parish. They have issued a card to every household with a request that it is kept by the phone and the grid reference is given to the emergency service should you need to call them. Please remember to leave your card should you move away.

There has been a lot of hard work from a lot of people to bring this project to a conclusion and the WI funded the whole project. As the WI said in their letter YOU COULD SAVE A LIFE BY SAVING THE EMERGENCY SERVICES TIME. Thanks to Glanton WI.

Missing Word Complete Story

You may recall many moons ago we had a competition to raise funds. We asked you to fill in the missing words from a story. I have been asked to publish the actual story with the missing words. Sorry for the delay but there is often too much news to fit it into the newsletter.

One (1 PALM) Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their children set off for a drive in the country. The youngest child asked if he could sit in the front with his mother. "Yes you (2 MAY)" said mother, "it won't make such a (3 SQUASH) in the back".

Soon they were in the country and passed a group of (4 RAMBLERS) carrying rucksacks. One of them was limping and mother said "It looks as if he had pulled a (5 CALF) (6 MUSSEL)" "No wonder" said father, "he is hiking in a (7 PEAR) of (8 JACK) boots".

They stopped in a village to have lunch at a pub, and to father's delight there was (9 CRICKET) in progress on the village green but the twins were not interested. They preferred games like chess which (10 TOUCAN) can play.

The landlord appeared with a (11 HOGSHEAD) of beer for the players, and mother said "l (12 PINE) for some refreshment too". After lunch, father asked the landlord the quickest way to the coast. " (13 TERN) right at the (14 PETREL) station" he said, "and then (15 BEAR) left at the next fork in the road".

They arrived at Alnmouth, and father pointed out the golf (16 LYNX) where he had once had an (17 EAGLE) three at the last hole. "Don't (18 BOAR) us with golfing stories" said the children.

On the (19 ROOT) home they were upset when they had to go (20 SLOE) at the scene of an accident and (21 STEER) all round the broken glass. Mother's (22 HART) turned over when she saw the policemen get out of their (23 PANDA) car to help the injured. "They will need a (24 CRANE) to get that car out of the ditch" said father. Mother, who was very shaken, said " (25 LETTUCE) go straight back now my (26 DEER) and (27 DUCK) the (28 RUSH) hour traffic".

"Suits me" said the eldest boy," I have a (29 DATE) this evening with a (30 PEACH) of a girl, she is very rich, and as you know I intend to (31 TURNIP)". " (32 FIG)", said his brother, "if she (33 GNU) what an (34 ASS) you are she (35 WOOD) have no (36 THYME) for you". The boys' (37 CHAT) cheered them all up and father drove carefully home along the (38 RUFF) road.
