The 81st Glanton Show

Show day draws near again, so start planning your entries if you haven't already done so!

The show committee would appreciate the help of any volunteer on show day to help with organising - particularly the admissions gate and parking. If you can spare an hour or two to help, contact any committee member or Claire Swanson, Show Secretary on 01665 578 594.

Clay Pigeon Shoot

The annual Clay Pigeon Shoot was held on Sunday 18th July in aid of the Glanton Show.

The good weather encouraged a sizeable turnout of competitors who enjoyed the challenging layout. The number of entries and generous sponsorship enabled a record contribution to Show Funds.

Thanks to all the volunteers who gave their time on the day and those who donated prizes and sponsorship for making the event so successful.

Parish Council News

The Parish Council would like to thank the following:

The council has accepted the offer of a free Northumberland County Flag, so watch out for it flying high.

Lastly the council has received a comment on how nice the new stone work and window is on Front Street.

News from the United Reformed Church

Well, you wouldn't believe it but summer is here again. Though looking out at the weather I really don't believe it. But I do hope that it clears up, at least for the Glanton Show, which I am looking forward to. In fact I have been looking forward to these summer months and especially the shows, for a while now. We only arrived part way through the summer last year, and so missed many of the village shows, so it will be a treat for us this year. I have already attended the Felton Village Show, and have enjoyed watching a ducking at the Alnwick Fair. It is wonderful to be a part of communities that are so active, where so much goes on. It is in such communities as these that the Christian Gospel of love for our neighbours, and of service to our communities and one another is truly acted out. So, on a personal note, I would like to offer a thank you to all who have helped to make the community in Glanton what it is.

I would also like to take this opportunity to invite any First School children to our holiday club that we will be running in August. The dates are Monday 9th August through to Friday 13th August, 10 am 'til 12 noon at Longframlington United Reformed Church. Feel free to come along any morning or all the mornings. The cost of each morning is 50p, and squash and biscuits will be served at halftime. The club is called Mission Miracle Maker, and we will be watching the film the Miracle Maker through the course of the week. Middle School children are also welcome to come along and help. If you want to know more then please contact me on 01670 783452.

I hope that you all have a great summer, and I'm sure I'll see some of you at the show.

God Bless

Edward Butlin

Plastic Recycling Query - Which plastics to recycle?

The Alnwick District Recycle Officer, has clarified that there is normally a recycle triangle on the bottom of most plastic items, in addition there is normally a number between 1 and 6 either in the triangle or close by. They will take plastics coded 1, 2 & 3 for recycling but not 4, 5, & 6. This in practice normally means the plastic bottle but not the top.

The Alndale Hall

Another part of Glanton's history has closed. The Hall, more usually called the Meeting Room, has been used for worship by the Christian Brethren since it was erected in 1904, on land given by Mr. William Curry of Unthank - though they would have been meeting in Glanton before that time. Many people have come to know Glanton through the Whit Weekend Fellowship Meetings when large crowds from all over the country would attend Services in the Meeting Room and out in the village. The Memorial Hall was also used, and the field below would be used to park all the cars. These Meetings eventually moved to Rothbury but there have been lots of memorable evenings of hymn singing in the Meeting Room since then. Money left in the kitty has been given to the Whittingham Churchyard Fund and also a generous donation to Glanton Memorial Hall in appreciation for the use of the Hall for very many years. It is sad to lose another of our great traditions.
