Aln and Breamish Local History Society

John Burn requests assistance with information to help with a project for the Aln and Breamish Local History Society concerning the Keppie Well Fresh Water system.

  1. The flow from the well passes under the Pyke Road and then through five stone capped wells flowing south. What was the purpose of these wells?
  2. The hydraulic ram serving the Pyke. When constructed? When made obsolete?
  3. The flow continues S/SE towards the Whittingham Road and it is believed to pass beneath it to feed troughs on the East side. Where does the flow pass beneath the road?
  4. The pant which used to be sited on the road to the North of Coniston House. When was it constructed and when was it removed? I have an idea of the general form but require photo or graphic depiction giving more detail.

82nd Glanton Show

The Glanton Show Committee would like to thank everyone, young and old who helped make the 82nd show such a success.

Despite heavy showers in the morning entries filled the tent and the weather improved as visitors arrived to enjoy the attractions on offer.

Produce Stall - Thank you to everyone who contributed to the produce stall at this year's. It was a great success and managed to help offset the increases in the costs of the tent.

An article from the Citizens Advice

Over 60s - How many people in our part of Northumberland are trying to live on less than they should?

We at the local Citizens Advice Bureau have a special project helping people to find out what benefits they are entitled to and helping them to apply. People needn't be put off by complicated forms or not being sure what to do. We will help them fill in applications and give them the support they need. If you know of anyone who would benefit, they can phone 01665 604714 and we will arrange an appointment or a home visit.

This is just one of the many ways we help people with advice and information.

If you would like to give your time to support this work, we have opportunities for volunteer advisers, support workers, trustee board members and people with fundraising skills. Phone us to apply or find out more.

1st Whittingham Beavers

1st Whittingham Beavers was launched on 10th July with a Teddy Bear's Picnic in Thrunton Woods. The Beavers walked 4km singing songs and playing games on the way.

The picnic at the top of the hill was an opportunity for Clive Gray (Group Scout Leader) to chair our inaugural meeting and elect a Group Executive Committee. We were delighted to welcome Rob Parker (Glanton) as Chairman, Louise Watson (Whittingham) as Treasurer and Gayle Hibbert (Alnham) as Secretary.

We start meetings on 8th September with leaders Ninette Edwards and Philip Watson. Thanks to parents and volunteers who have agreed to be Colony Assistants.

The Group are very grateful to Whittingham and Callaly Parish Council for their donation of £200, and to the Scout Association for their start up grant of  100.

Parish Council

Grass Cutting

You will be aware that due to Health and Safety issues the Council cannot cut the grass on the bank near the flag pole. The Parish Council are now in discussion about options for landscaping part of the bank, above the height that can be safely cut by the District Council. It is hoped this will be resolved before next year. The Parish Council wish to thank all those who helped in tidying up the area before the Village Show.

Trafalgar Day Celebration

Details of the celebration are currently being finalised. The event will happen on Saturday 22nd October in the Village Hall. A leaflet will appear through your door in the near future outlining the activities for the day.

Conservation Area Character Appraisal

Glanton has, for many years, been in a conservation area. The District Council has an obligation to review the areas periodically. They have commissioned a review by a firm of architects and the results of this review need to be discussed. This is important to all those living in the village itself and it will have implications for everyone.

The Planning and Conservation Department of the District Council have offered to present the findings to the village therefore a Village Meeting will be arranged when available dates have been established. Please watch out for the announcement, it will affect the houses in the village
