It’s the 84th Glanton Show

This will still go ahead, but in a revised format due to the recent foot and mouth outbreak. The Show will now go ahead in the Village Memorial and Church Halls, as well as outside (weather permitting). We hope to still have the band and many stall holders.

We will stick to the same timings, with competition entries being taken to the Memorial Hall by 10 a.m. and the Halls opening after judging around 1.30 p.m. Please pick up your free brochure and come along and enjoy this great day out.

The 2007 village Christmas card will also be on sale for the first time, with a limited edition of 250, its first come first served.

Rothbury Swimming Pool

I’ve been asked to remind everyone that the newly refurbished swimming pool at the Dr Thomlinson Church of England Middle School is open every day bar Mondays. For further details www.leisurealnwick.org.uk or 01669 622834.

Volunteers Needed

It is with great sadness that we will be leaving the village and moving to Wales in the New Year. To that effect volunteers are needed to take over the following small jobs:

If you are interested please contact me.

In addition the Glanton Show Committee needs a secretary.

Pre Christmas Village Hall Craft Fair

I have provisionally booked Sunday 2 Dec for a small craft fair in the village hall, where I hope to sell my remaining Northumberland photographic stock. If anyone else would like to join in with this, with their goods, please contact me. The hall will just ask for a donation at the end of the session.

Fly Tipping

It has been brought of the attention of the Parish Council, that there have been several incidents of fly tipping, especially garden refuse on Playwell Lane. Alnwick District Council Litter Control Officers can issue spot fines of £75 to known perpetrators. The District Council have a regular collection of garden waste or please take it to your local refuse tip.

St Andrew’s United Reformed Church

St Switin’s day stayed fine and dry for our Garden Party. We were pleased to welcome so many people and to raise £562.85 for church funds. Thank you to everyone who gave for the stalls and the teas and to all the people who came to spend their money.

Open Gardens

Thank you for everyone who came to, and helped with, the Glanton Pyke Open Gardens, and we raised £1900 for the Memorial Hall, which is 6 months running expenses.

Glanton Vision “a parish plan”

Thank you to everyone who completed the recent Parish Survey. In total 72 households responded, representing the views of 142 residents across a wide range of age groups. Developing your ideas, and suggestions into an action plan for Glanton is the next step. The volunteer section authors are hard at work preparing the draft plan. This will be available in early Autumn for everyone to read before the final version is produced. The parish plan group will have an information stand at the village show on Saturday 11th August so come and see us there. Your views count!

The next major events to support the development of the plan will be held on Saturday 22nd September. There will be a coffee morning in the village hall featuring displays from the Glanton archive about past village life and events. All ages are welcome and we would particularly like to hear from older residents. This will be a chance to catch up with old friends, meet new residents and chat over coffee and biscuits. Please telephone the number below if you need transport to hall for the coffee morning.

In the afternoon there will a fun-filled family treasure hunt around the village, ending with tea and music in the village hall. Look out for posters and put the date in your diary.

Don’t forget, this is your village and what you want is important to the planning group, so please support these events and a big thanks for your work so far!

Parish Council News

Local elections were held in May and five Parish Councillors remain in post. George Dodds was re-elected as chairman and John Guiry was elected as vice-chairman. Unfortunately, the numbers of councillors are now down to just five out of potential 10, with Susan Collingwood-Cameron, Joe Easton and Chris Livsey remaining in post. We desperately need new members of the Parish Council. If you are interested in becoming a Councillor please contact George on 578 645. The long running saga of the overhanging trees on Whittingham Road is slowly making progress. The Parish Council are working closely with the Highways Authority on the issue.

Two new litter bins have been put up - one outside the shop and the other outside Greystones on Front Street.

Finally, the Secretary of State has announced that Northumberland will have one Council rather than the two proposed by the Local Districts. The implications for Parish Councils are unknown but I will try to keep you informed over the next months.

George Dodds, Chairman of Glanton Parish Council.
