Tree Planting in Glanton

Today, Sunday 13th March 2000, saw the last of 60 trees being planted in our Millennium Oak Tree Avenue leading from the A697 into the village of Glanton.

This is one of our projects to celebrate the Millennium. At a Village Meeting at this time last year a number of projects were discussed and John Swanson suggested having an Oak Avenue leading to the village. The idea met with great enthusiasm but we realised that to see the benefit in our lifetime we would need to purchase ? standard trees.

As this would be fairly expensive we tried to raise funds through a grant. Unfortunately we were not successful therefore plan two was devised.

We issued a newsletter asking the people of the village to sponsor a tree.

The response was overwhelming and within a month we had sufficient funds to buy the trees. It only took a little longer to raise the money purchase the guards and stakes to give the trees their best start in life. At the same time we needed the utility companies to confirm that they would not be affected by the planting.

So through the generosity of the people of Glanton we have raised the funds and spent the weekend of the 10th to the 12th March digging holes and planting the trees. In the glorious early spring sunshine some of the sponsors were able to turn out and witness the event and imagine how magnificent the avenue will look in just a few years' time.

This has been a true village project organised by the Glanton Millennium Group and the Glanton Parish Council but the true stars of the show are the villagers, and others as far afield as Australia who have links with the village, who made this all happen due to their generous donations. We are also grateful to the stalwart band who did all the hard work, and to Calum Kohler, of The Pike Nurseries, who was generous with his help, and kept a watchful eye on our endeavours.
